USDA Customer Help Desk Forest Service
The Agriculture Department's Forest Services are thinking about a little of the different tact to going mobile.
Many agencies discuss utilizing a virtual desktop interface (VDI) to allow employees to safely connect to the network and programs with the cloud.
But Doug Nash, the Forest Service's chief information officer, is testing laptop computer-on-a-stick concept because of its mobile labor force.
"It's basically a specialized, highly-secure USB device which has a Home windows 8 Forest Service imaged desktop onto it, " he stated. "It is $200 to $300 to deploy and provision. As lengthy just like any worker has any type of PC device, they are able to hook it up as well as their jobs are attached to the network, and it is an effective solution."
He stated it provides teleworkers along with other mobile employees an alternative choice to operate safely everywhere, anytime.
Nash stated employees use USDA's network, programs and save data to the primary database with the PC-on-a-stick's secure connection.
"We've a lot of employees which are in the area, in the nation's forest and grasslands, fighting fires and doing research that getting a simple, highly connected device to complete area work will undoubtedly save folks considerable time, " Nash stated.
Nash stated the proceed to mobile is not about PC either. The Forest Service carried out an evaluation this past year with Apple's iPad where aircraft pilots within the aviation program used named to drag up flight plans and maps.
"By the start of March, in line with the success we'd using the iPad pilot, i will be moving out our traveling with a laptop strategy and solutions architecture, and which makes it open to our employees contributing to the toolkit iPads and apple iphones, " he stated. "Among the overarching concepts around making iPads along with other mobile technology, we're clearly budget restricted over the Forest Service so you want to avoid getting iPads be almost this symbol of status that you will get it together with all of this other technology you've. Towards the extent practical, we would like the iPad to become an alternate device instead of a laptop."
Nash stated when the mobile infrastructure is fully built out, there's a subset from the Forest Service's employees who'd take advantage of iPads in the way they obtain jobs done.
